EXAM PHOBIA: ARE WE PARENTS TO BE BLAMED?

Exam fever is all over. Wherever I go, whomever I meet, exams and studies is a common topic that pops up. The syllabus. The teachers. The school. And then, the competition. The pressure and so on. Parents at times speak as if it is not their kids, but they themselves who are going to write the exams. They seem to know more. Bothered more. Tensed more.

And that brings me to what I feel is a very pertinent question: Are we parents to be blamed for the exam phobia the child has?

I have always heard this that kids react according to the vibes they receive from their parents. If parents are calm, kids are calmer. If parents are jumpy and jittery, that automatically transfers to the kids behaviour. And so on. So, going by this, if the parents are worried, tensed and panicked about studies and exams, isn’t it obvious that the kid will experience a mounting pressure on him?

I mean just think about it. What would possibly happen if a child constantly hears about good marks, good college, a prolific career, money and settlement. What will his tiny mind go through?

It succumbs. Just that.

It is important to understand somewhere that the more parents will stay away from the humdrum of exams, I think, kids will do much better. Because when there is less pressure, the performance is always better. The idea is to make them see the larger world.

My kids are still small. But old enough to get some pressure during exam.

I too miss the basics and jump into the terrifying trail of exam fever. But, then I tell myself, it is just an exam. He needs to sail through a much bigger exam called life. Isn’t it?

Do we bother to prepare them for that, at all ?
