A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A TEACHER

After graduating from Lady Shri Ram College in New Delhi I got married and moved to Bangalore in 1975. Two years later I took up International Montessori Training. In 1980, I joined Sophia High School in the kindergarten section. Since then it has been like a fairy tale…so the apt opening to my story would read, “Once upon a time Mrs. Poonam joined Sophia High School and worked there happily ever after…”

Love and passion for teaching little ones has helped me learn at every step. The children have been my teachers. Each one of them is so special and unique that my learning never stops. It is challenging to manage 50 five year olds but it is also fun. My mind has to be alert all the time. It has to innovate techniques and strategies to make learning easy and full of fun.

Story telling, poetry and art have always been close to my heart. I start my day with a story, as this is the best way to bond with the children. I enjoy story time with them as much as they enjoy listening to it. Maximum learning happens at this time and I can always find stories and poems for all the topics in the curriculum.

Around ten years ago, I joined Brindavan Education Trust to work in an after school remedial program for children with Specific Learning Difficulties. My daughters were grown up and I had time to be of help to such children. Although, the years of experience in teaching at Sophia gave me the platform to work with these children, I found it essential to take up a special course in SLD. This made me more aware of their specific needs. Since I was working little children at Sophia, the early intervention program at Brindavan was the apt place for me.

To conclude, I love my little ones and whatever I do comes from my heart. Seeing the children come to school with a smile makes my day.
